BNZ vs Wise: International Transfer Fees Compared
BNZ or Wise: the clearest illustration of the hidden margin
BNZ is the best case study in New Zealand banking for why comparing transfer fees is useless. Its own fee schedule, effective 31 March 2026, charges no fee at all to send an international payment online in a foreign currency, and no correspondent bank fee either. Zero, twice. Yet in third-party testing, sending NZ$5,000 to the United States through BNZ cost NZ$77.46, against NZ$16.37 through Wise. With a NZ$0 fee, every cent of that NZ$77.46 was the exchange rate — an implied margin of 1.55%. It is the cleanest arithmetic on this whole site, because there is no fee to subtract.
We earn a commission if you open an account with some of the providers listed on this page. It never changes the rate or fee you pay, and it never changes our rankings — our comparison figures come from each provider's published pricing.
Quick verdict: BNZ charges NZ$0 to send international payments online in foreign currency, but cost NZ$77.46 on a measured NZ$5,000 transfer to the US against Wise's NZ$16.37 — all of the difference being the exchange rate margin of about 1.55%. BNZ is the cheapest of the measured New Zealand banks and the fastest, with many transfers arriving the same business day. It is the better choice for its 230-country SWIFT reach, for bank drafts and documentary credits, for Pacific destinations Wise cannot reach, and for large transfers where you want a named contact.
BNZ's published international payment fees, itemised
From BNZ's Personal Account, Service and Facility Fees schedule, effective 31 March 2026.
| What you're doing | BNZ fee |
|---|---|
| Send an international payment online in a foreign currency | NZ$0 |
| Send an international payment online in New Zealand dollars | NZ$5.00 per payment |
| Correspondent bank fee — foreign currency send | NZ$0 |
| Correspondent bank fee — NZD send | NZ$12.00 per payment |
| Send with branch assistance | NZ$25.00 per payment |
| Receive an international payment credited to a BNZ account | NZ$10.00 per payment |
| Receive an international payment credited to another bank | NZ$15.00 per payment |
| Receive a payment that arrives via another New Zealand bank | No BNZ charge |
| Trace, amend or cancel an international payment | NZ$25.00 per payment |
| Foreign currency account monthly maintenance | NZ$5.00 (GBP) up to NZ$850 (JPY), with balance-based rebates |
| Exchange rate margin | Not published |
Three things deserve attention. First, the NZ$0 applies only to foreign-currency sends. If you send New Zealand dollars, BNZ charges NZ$5 plus a NZ$12 correspondent fee — NZ$17 more, and you also lose control of the conversion, because a bank offshore performs it at a rate you never see. Always send in the destination currency at BNZ. Second, BNZ's inward fee of NZ$10 is the lowest of the five majors, and if a payment reaches you via another New Zealand bank BNZ charges nothing at all. Third, those foreign currency account maintenance fees are structured with rebate thresholds based on average daily balance — the headline NZ$850 for a JPY account looks alarming but reflects the yen's unit size, and the rebates matter more than the sticker. If you are considering one, get the specific numbers for your currency and expected balance.
The 1.55% you cannot see on your statement
BNZ does not publish its exchange rate margin anywhere. Its international payments page invites you to "get personalised live exchange rates," which is accurate and tells you nothing about the markup embedded in them.
But because BNZ's online foreign-currency fee is exactly NZ$0, the measured total cost is the margin. NZ$77.46 on NZ$5,000 is 1.55%. There is no arithmetic to argue about. That is roughly six times Wise's all-in 0.33% on the same transfer and about two and a half times XE's 0.60%.
What 1.55% looks like in practice
Say the mid-market NZD/USD rate is 0.6000, so NZ$5,000 should be US$3,000.
- BNZ quotes you roughly 0.5907.
- You receive about US$2,953.50, not US$3,000.
- You are US$46.50 short — NZ$77.50 at the real rate.
- Your BNZ statement says: NZ$5,000 sent, no fee.
Nothing is hidden in the sense of being concealed. It is simply not itemised, and there is no line on any document you receive that adds up to NZ$77.46. That is why the NZ bank international transfer fee comparison ranks banks on total cost rather than advertised fee — the advertised fee at BNZ is a perfect zero and BNZ is still the seventh cheapest of twelve providers on the benchmark.
Worked comparison: NZ$1,000, NZ$5,000 and NZ$20,000
Total cost, fee plus margin, sending to US dollars. The NZ$5,000 column is measured third-party data; the other two apply BNZ's measured 1.55% margin and each provider's measured percentage, so treat them as indicative rather than quoted.
| Provider | NZ$1,000 | NZ$5,000 | NZ$20,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| BNZ online, foreign currency | ~NZ$15.50 | NZ$77.46 | ~NZ$310 |
| BNZ online, sent in NZD | ~NZ$32.50 | ~NZ$94.50 | ~NZ$327 |
| BNZ in branch | ~NZ$40.50 | ~NZ$102.50 | ~NZ$335 |
| Wise | ~NZ$5–8 | NZ$16.37 | ~NZ$66 |
| XE Money Transfer | ~NZ$8–12 | NZ$30.18 | ~NZ$120 |
| OFX | ~NZ$20 (NZ$12 fee + margin) | NZ$39.02 | ~NZ$156 |
| TorFX | ~NZ$12–16 | NZ$50.51 | ~NZ$202 |
| Western Union | Quote only | Quote only | Quote only |
Note the second row. Sending NZ$1,000 in New Zealand dollars rather than US dollars roughly doubles your cost at BNZ, from about NZ$15.50 to about NZ$32.50, because the NZ$5 fee and NZ$12 correspondent charge are flat and small transfers cannot absorb them. It is the single easiest saving available to a BNZ customer and it takes one dropdown selection.
How long each takes
BNZ is the fastest of the New Zealand banks on its own account: it states that many transfers arrive the same business day, across payments in over 30 currencies to more than 230 countries. That is a genuine operational advantage and a fair reason to choose BNZ when timing matters more than 1.5%.
Wise settles many major-currency transfers within hours and often in seconds on corridors where it holds local payout rails, but it is not universally faster than BNZ, and first-time transfers or larger amounts can be held for verification. If your payment is time-critical, the honest answer is that both are usually fine and the cut-off time you submit by matters more than the brand.
When BNZ is genuinely the better choice
- Reach. BNZ sends to more than 230 countries in over 30 currencies. Wise sends to 80 countries. If your destination is unusual, BNZ can probably do it and Wise probably cannot. That is not a small thing.
- Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and the Cook Islands. Wise supports none of them. BNZ does. For those corridors there is no comparison to make. Fiji is supported by both.
- Same-day speed. BNZ's own claim that many transfers arrive the same business day is the strongest speed statement any of the five majors makes. If you need money to land today, ask BNZ.
- Bank drafts, documentary credits and letters of credit. Required by some visa applications, foreign universities, court filings and trade counterparties. Bank products only — no digital provider issues them.
- Large transfers with a named contact. On a property settlement or a business acquisition, a relationship manager who can trace and escalate a stuck SWIFT message is worth more than the margin. Pay the NZ$25 branch fee on that one and get it in writing.
- Existing BNZ lending on a package. Check whether moving FX volume affects your relationship pricing before you move it.
- Forward contracts and hedging. Locking a rate for a payment months ahead is a dealing-desk product. BNZ, OFX and TorFX will do it. Wise will not.
- You need banknotes. Wise cannot hand you cash. See currency exchange near me for that, and do I need cash overseas for how much to bother with.
BNZ card fees overseas: 2.25%, the highest of the five
BNZ calls it a Foreign Currency Service Fee and it applies to purchases and cash withdrawals in foreign currencies.
| Card / action | BNZ fee |
|---|---|
| BNZ credit card, foreign currency purchase | 2.25% of the NZ dollar value |
| BNZ Flexi Debit Visa, foreign currency purchase | 2.25% of the NZ dollar value |
| Overseas ATM withdrawal — BNZ's own fee | No charge |
| Over-the-counter cash overseas — BNZ's own fee | No charge |
| Wise debit card | No foreign transaction fee; conversion from 0.25% at the mid-market rate |
2.25% is the highest foreign currency card fee of the five major New Zealand banks. For comparison, Westpac charges 1.83%, Kiwibank 1.85% on credit cards, ASB 2.10%, and ANZ charges 0% on personal credit cards. On NZ$4,000 of spending across a three-week trip, BNZ's 2.25% is NZ$90 — more than the entire NZ$77.46 it costs to wire NZ$5,000. It is also worth noting that BNZ charges nothing of its own for overseas ATM withdrawals, which is genuinely good; the 2.25% still applies to the converted amount, and the local ATM operator will add its own fee.
If you bank with BNZ and travel, this is the number to act on. A card with no foreign transaction fee saves you more over a trip than switching transfer providers saves you on one wire. Our best card to use overseas from NZ guide sets out the options, and travel money cards in NZ covers the prepaid alternatives.
What Wise doesn't do
Wise reaches 80 countries; BNZ reaches 230. Wise cannot hand you banknotes, does not issue bank drafts or documentary credits, does not lend, and does not assign you a dealer. It cannot send to Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea or the Cook Islands.
On regulation: Wise Payments Ltd operates in New Zealand as a foreign entity and is not licensed by a New Zealand regulator. It is supervised by the Department of Internal Affairs for anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorism-financing purposes, and customer funds are safeguarded rather than covered by a deposit guarantee. State that clearly and let people decide — it is a real difference from a registered New Zealand bank, even though New Zealand has no retail deposit guarantee covering BNZ balances either at the time of writing.
Compare the amount that lands, not the fee. BNZ's fee on an online foreign-currency send is a genuine NZ$0, and the measured total on NZ$5,000 to the US was still NZ$77.46 — against NZ$16.37 through Wise at the mid-market rate.

Two things to do before your next BNZ transfer
- Select the destination currency, not NZD. This alone removes NZ$17 of BNZ fees and puts the conversion under your control rather than an offshore bank's. On small transfers it halves your cost.
- Get two quotes at the same moment. Enter the same amount in BNZ's payment screen and in a specialist's calculator, and compare the figure the recipient receives. Check both against the mid-market rate using our currency converter. Ten minutes, and on NZ$20,000 it is worth about NZ$240.
Test it against BNZ on one transfer. Send NZ$200–500, screenshot the quote, and put it beside what BNZ offers for the same amount on the same day. That comparison is more convincing than any table on this page.
Check a live Wise quoteFree to open. You will see the exact fee and the mid-market rate before you confirm, so you can check it against your bank's quote line by line. Wise cannot send to Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea or the Cook Islands.
Frequently asked questions
Does BNZ charge a fee for international payments?
Not for online payments sent in a foreign currency — BNZ's fee schedule effective 31 March 2026 shows no charge, and no correspondent bank fee either. Sending in New Zealand dollars costs NZ$5 plus a NZ$12 correspondent fee. Branch-assisted payments cost NZ$25. The exchange rate margin applies regardless.
Is BNZ international transfer expensive?
It is the cheapest of the measured New Zealand banks and still about 4.7 times the cost of the cheapest specialist. Third-party testing put BNZ at NZ$77.46 to send NZ$5,000 to the US, against NZ$84.58 for ASB, NZ$108.39 for Kiwibank, and NZ$16.37 for Wise. Because BNZ's online fee is NZ$0, the entire NZ$77.46 is exchange rate margin — about 1.55%.
What exchange rate margin does BNZ add?
BNZ does not publish one. Because its online foreign-currency transfer fee is exactly NZ$0, the measured all-in cost of NZ$77.46 on NZ$5,000 to US dollars is entirely margin, giving an implied 1.55%. Independent surveys put New Zealand bank margins at 1.5–3% for major currencies and higher for Pacific currencies.
Should I send NZD or foreign currency with BNZ?
Foreign currency, always. Sending in New Zealand dollars adds NZ$5 in BNZ fees plus a NZ$12 correspondent fee — NZ$17 — and hands the conversion to a bank offshore at a rate you never see and cannot compare. On a NZ$1,000 transfer, choosing NZD roughly doubles your total cost.
What is BNZ's foreign transaction fee on cards?
BNZ charges a Foreign Currency Service Fee of 2.25% of the New Zealand dollar value on purchases and cash withdrawals in a foreign currency, on both credit cards and the Flexi Debit Visa. That is the highest of the five major New Zealand banks. BNZ adds no fee of its own for overseas ATM withdrawals, though the ATM operator may.
Does BNZ charge to receive an international payment?
NZ$10 if the payment is credited to a BNZ account and NZ$15 if BNZ receives it but credits it to another bank. If the payment reaches you via a different New Zealand bank, BNZ charges nothing. The NZ$10 is the lowest inward fee among the five major New Zealand banks.
How long does a BNZ international payment take?
BNZ states that many transfers arrive the same business day, which is the strongest speed claim of the five majors. It sends in over 30 currencies to more than 230 countries. Less common corridors take longer, and the cut-off time you submit by affects the arrival date.
Should I use BNZ or Wise?
Use Wise for ordinary transfers to the 80 countries it supports — the measured saving was NZ$61 on NZ$5,000 and scales with the amount. Use BNZ when you need reach beyond those 80 countries, same-business-day delivery, a bank draft or documentary credit, a Pacific destination Wise cannot serve, or a named contact on a large payment. If you travel, replace BNZ's 2.25% card fee with something cheaper regardless of which you use for transfers.
