Napier's currency problem is a two-way one

Most New Zealand towns only need to think about outbound travellers. Napier has to think about both directions at once. Napier Port takes cruise ships through the spring-to-autumn season, decanting thousands of passengers a day onto Marine Parade with US dollars, Australian dollars, pounds and euros in their wallets and no obvious way to turn them into New Zealand cash. Meanwhile Hawke's Bay's apple, grape and squash industries run on Recognised Seasonal Employer labour from the Pacific, and those workers need to send earnings home — a different problem again. Layer on the Art Deco Festival crowds, the wineries around Taradale and Bay View, and a substantial retired population with offshore pensions, and you have a city with genuine, varied foreign exchange demand and almost nothing on the ground to serve it.

Why there is nowhere to change cash in Napier

We would rather tell you this plainly than pad the page with brand names that have no Hawke's Bay shopfront. Here is what we checked and what we found.

Be sceptical of directory listings that suggest otherwise. One widely-read comparison site currently offers Napier readers two "exchange services": a Hastings Street entry whose business name is literally the words "Opening Hours", and a First National real estate office on Nelson Quay in Ahuriri. Neither exchanges currency. That is the standard of data behind a lot of "best places to exchange money in Napier" pages, and it is why we would rather publish an empty table with an explanation.

Banks and ATMs in Napier

The obvious fallback used to be a bank. It no longer exists. No major New Zealand bank now sells foreign banknotes over the counter. ANZ exited foreign cash on 14 November 2020 and ASB on 2 July 2021. BNZ and Kiwibank have both also withdrawn from the service. Westpac — the last major bank still doing it — stopped on 30 January 2026. The branches on Emerson Street and Hastings Street will send an international transfer or open a foreign currency account. None will change your money.

If you have arrived in Napier on a cruise ship

This is the most common version of the question here, so let's answer it directly. You cannot convert your US dollars, pounds or euros into New Zealand cash anywhere in Napier. What you should do instead:

• Use an ATM. There are machines along Emerson Street, Hastings Street and Dickens Street within easy walking distance of the port shuttle drop-off, plus more at Tamatea and Taradale. They dispense New Zealand dollars against your home card. This is nearly always cheaper than a bureau would have been.
• Decline the "pay in your own currency" prompt. If an ATM or card terminal offers to charge you in USD, GBP or EUR instead of NZD, say no and choose New Zealand dollars. Accepting it hands the merchant's payment processor the right to set your exchange rate, typically at 3–6% worse than your own card would manage. • Pay by card. Napier is comprehensively card-accepting. Cafés on Emerson Street, the Art Deco Trust, the National Aquarium, wineries and i-SITE tours all take contactless. You need very little physical cash.
• Keep a small NZD float. NZ$50–100 covers a market stall at the Napier Urban Farmers' Market, a tip, or a small operator who is card-only in theory and cash-only in practice.

What a cash exchange would have cost you on NZ$2,000

It's worth knowing what Napier's lack of a bureau is actually saving you, because the answer is often "money". A retail exchange counter doesn't usually advertise a fee — it builds its margin into the rate on the board. Against the mid-market rate, the true midpoint of what a currency is trading at, a New Zealand counter typically sits 4% to 7% adrift on majors like USD, EUR, GBP and AUD, and further out on anything unusual. "0% commission" signs describe the fee, not the rate.

Illustratively, on NZ$2,000 and assuming a 5% spread — check any live board on the day, this is not a quote:

• About NZ$100 of your NZ$2,000 never becomes foreign currency. At a 7% spread it's nearer NZ$140.
• Bringing NZ$300 of unspent notes home and converting them back costs another spread, roughly NZ$15–20, on money you never even used.
• By contrast, converting NZ$2,000 at the mid-market rate with a fee from 0.25% costs single-digit dollars.

For a NZ$150–300 arrival float, a counter margin is a fair price for convenience. On NZ$2,000 it isn't, and in Napier the choice has been made for you anyway.

The split strategy, adapted for a city with no bureau

The usual advice is to buy a small cash float locally and card the rest. In Napier you can't do the first part, so shift it: order a modest amount of foreign cash online a fortnight before you fly, or simply plan to withdraw your arrival float from an ATM in the airport you land at — which, for most destinations, beats a Napier bureau rate you were never going to get anyway. Then put the bulk on a card that converts at the mid-market rate.

One honest limitation: Wise will not put banknotes in your hand in Napier. It is an account and a card. If you specifically need euros before you leave Hawke's Bay, an online order with lead time is your only route.

Sending money overseas from Napier — and an important limitation

Hawke's Bay has one of the country's largest seasonal Pacific workforces, and remittance costs matter enormously to those households. So this needs saying clearly rather than buried: Wise does not support transfers to Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea or the Cook Islands. A great many RSE workers in Hawke's Bay orchards and vineyards come from exactly those countries.
