Send Money to the UK From NZ: NZD to GBP Transfers Compared
England is the single largest overseas birthplace in New Zealand — 208,428 people at the 2023 census, about 4.2% of the country — and the corridor runs hard both ways: rent from a flat in Manchester, a deposit on a house in Bristol, a share of a grandparent's estate, a pension sitting with a UK provider. The routes are not equally priced. On NZ$20,000 the gap between cheapest and worst is usually NZ$250–400, and on a property deposit it runs into thousands.

Quick verdict: The cheapest way to send money to the UK from New Zealand is a digital provider that converts at the mid-market rate. On Wise's published NZ pricing, sending NZ$1,000 to a UK bank account costs about NZ$4.00–4.18 all-in, against roughly NZ$20–35 through a New Zealand bank once the 1.5–3% margin buried in the rate is counted. You need the recipient's 6-digit sort code and 8-digit account number; an IBAN also works. Because the UK runs Faster Payments, most transfers land the same day. Above about NZ$100,000 with a fixed settlement date, also get a dealing-desk quote from OFX or TorFX.
NZD to GBP transfer costs compared
Most of the cost here is invisible. A bank quotes "no transfer fee" or a modest NZ$15, then converts at a rate 1.5–3% away from mid-market. The fee is the small number; the margin is the big one.
| Provider | NZ$1,000 | NZ$5,000 | NZ$20,000 | How they charge |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wise | ~NZ$4.00 | ~NZ$19 | ~NZ$74 | Mid-market rate plus a stated fee from 0.25%. No rate markup |
| XE | ~NZ$6 | ~NZ$30 | ~NZ$120 | No upfront fee, small margin inside the rate |
| OFX | ~NZ$8 | ~NZ$39 | ~NZ$120–160 | Rate margin only; desk negotiable on large sums |
| TorFX | ~NZ$10 | ~NZ$51 | ~NZ$150–200 | Rate margin, no fee, allocated dealer |
| NZ bank (online) | ~NZ$20–35 | ~NZ$77–110 | ~NZ$310–420 | NZ$5–20 fee plus 1.5–3% margin in the rate |
| NZ bank (in branch) | ~NZ$40–55 | ~NZ$95–130 | ~NZ$330–440 | NZ$25–30 staff-assisted fee plus the same margin |
| PayPal | ~NZ$45 | ~NZ$227 | ~NZ$900 | Fee plus roughly 3–4% inside the rate |
Wise figures at NZ$1,000 are Wise's own published NZD→GBP quote, August 2026; larger amounts are scaled from its stated fee rate. Other figures derive from third-party comparison data for a NZ$5,000 New Zealand outbound transfer and are scaled — indicative, not quotes. Bank ranges reflect published fees across the five main banks plus typical retail FX margins.
Funding method matters as much as provider. On the same NZ$1,000 Wise quote the total is NZ$4.00 from your Wise balance, NZ$4.18 by bank transfer, NZ$6.56 by debit card, NZ$14.99 by credit card and NZ$15.95 by Apple Pay or Google Pay — and credit card is the route most likely to be treated as a cash advance. Our breakdown of Wise fees for New Zealanders covers each charge; NZ bank international transfer fees sets out what the five main banks charge.
About NZ$4 to send NZ$1,000 to a UK bank account. Wise converts at the mid-market rate with a stated fee from 0.25%, and because the UK payout runs on Faster Payments most transfers arrive the same day.

How fast does money reach a UK bank account?
Faster Payments settles sterling between UK accounts in seconds, around the clock, weekends included — so once your NZD is converted the final leg is effectively instant. Wise reports about 74% of transfers arriving in under 20 seconds and 95% within a day; XE, OFX and TorFX run same day to two working days once funding clears; a New Zealand bank sending by SWIFT takes 1–3 working days, sometimes five.
Delays are rarely the network. They are the 11-hour time difference (12 in UK summer time), a mistyped sort code, or a name mismatch — UK banks run Confirmation of Payee, which can stop a payment to "J Smith" on an account registered to "John Alan Smith". One product limitation: Wise pays GBP only to accounts reachable by Faster Payments or CHAPS, so Bacs-only and cheque-only accounts cannot be paid this way. Channel Islands, Isle of Man and Gibraltar accounts are reachable, but by IBAN.
What details you need: sort code, account number, IBAN
- Sort code — 6 digits, usually written 12-34-56. Identifies bank and branch.
- Account number — 8 digits. Do not include the sort code in it.
- Account name exactly as the UK bank holds it. Full legal name, not a nickname or initials.
An IBAN works instead — a UK IBAN is 22 characters, starts GB, and has the sort code and account number embedded, so it is the same information in a different wrapper. Your NZ bank may also ask for a BIC/SWIFT code because it sends by SWIFT; digital providers on Faster Payments generally do not need one. On anything over about NZ$10,000 to a new recipient, send NZ$100 first and confirm it arrived — NZ$4 on a test payment is cheap insurance against a transposed digit.
Buying UK property, or paying a UK deposit
Here the pricing stops being a rounding error: on a deposit worth NZ$215,000, a 2% bank margin is NZ$4,300, while a mid-market provider costs a few hundred. Two practical points.
- Solicitors' client accounts are strict. UK conveyancers generally want funds from an account in the buyer's own name, often by CHAPS on completion day. Ask in week one whether they accept funds paid in from a payment institution rather than a bank — most do, but find out early. Source-of-funds documentation is unavoidable at both ends.
- Rate risk on a fixed date is real. A 3% move on NZ$400,000 is NZ$12,000. OFX and TorFX offer forward contracts that lock a rate for a future date against a deposit. Wise does not offer forwards — it is spot only. This is one of the few cases where a broker beats the cheapest spot provider.
Budget for the tax too. Buyers who are not UK resident pay a 2% non-resident surcharge on top of standard Stamp Duty Land Tax on residential property in England and Northern Ireland. The residence test is mechanical — 183 days of UK presence in the 12 months to the transaction date — and the surcharge is reclaimable within two years if you become UK resident within 12 months of buying. Scotland and Wales run their own equivalents.
UK pension transfers and QROPS: the landscape
A UK pension transfer moves scheme-to-scheme: you never receive the money and never send it yourself, so a money-transfer service is the wrong tool and nothing else on this page applies. As background only:
- A UK registered pension can generally only transfer to a QROPS — a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme. HMRC publishes a list of schemes that have notified it, and several New Zealand superannuation schemes appear on it. Transferring to a non-qualifying scheme is an unauthorised payment, taxed punitively.
- On the UK side, transfers count against the overseas transfer allowance, £1,073,100 for most people, with a 25% overseas transfer charge on value above it or on transfers failing the exclusion conditions. An exclusion that previously covered some EEA transfers where the member stayed UK resident was removed on 30 October 2024, so older guides mislead.
- On the New Zealand side, the transfer falls under the foreign superannuation rules and is generally taxable here. New migrants usually have a four-year window from becoming New Zealand tax resident in which a lump-sum transfer is exempt — which is why timing matters far more than the exchange rate on the day. From 1 April 2026 there is also a Transfer Scheme Withholding Tax option: a flat 28% on the assessable portion, deducted by the receiving scheme, instead of the amount going onto your own return at marginal rates up to 39%. It has short deadlines once funds land, so arrange it before the transfer.
- The UK state pension is separate — not transferable, not a QROPS matter. It is simply paid to you, and New Zealand's direct deduction policy generally offsets it against NZ Super.
This is general information, not financial advice, and we are not authorised to give it. UK transfers above certain values legally require advice from a UK-regulated adviser holding the pension transfer specialist qualification, and the New Zealand side needs an accountant who does foreign superannuation work. The mistakes run to tens of thousands of dollars and are mostly irreversible.
Inheritance from the UK
A UK inheritance usually arrives as one large payment from an executor or solicitor, and the question is who converts it. If the executor sends GBP to your New Zealand bank, your bank converts at its retail rate and charges an inbound fee of roughly NZ$10–25 — on an £80,000 legacy a 2% margin is about NZ$3,400 you never see itemised. Receiving into an account with UK local details lets you hold the sterling and convert in tranches, which suits estates that pay out in stages.
On tax: UK inheritance tax is paid by the estate before distribution, not by you as beneficiary, and New Zealand has no inheritance tax, estate duty or gift duty — gift duty was abolished in 2011. A cash legacy is generally not taxable income here. Inheriting assets is different: UK shares, a rental property or a pension interest can create foreign investment fund or rental-income obligations here.
Receiving GBP in New Zealand
The corridor leaks in the same place both ways. If you receive sterling regularly — UK rent, contract income, a UK employer, a private pension — the default converts every payment at your bank's retail rate. On £2,000 a month, a 2% margin is roughly NZ$1,000 a year, plus NZ$120–300 in inbound payment fees.
UK local account details fix both halves. Your tenant, client or provider pays what looks to them like an ordinary UK account — no international payment and no international fee at their end — the sterling stays sterling, and you convert when you choose. Wise provides local details for GBP alongside AUD, USD, EUR, NZD, CAD, SGD, HUF, RON and TRY. Two caveats: it is not a UK bank account and carries no deposit guarantee, and Wise cannot accept cheques or cash.
Hold GBP instead of converting every payment. A Wise account gives you UK local account details, so a UK tenant, client or executor pays into what looks to them like a normal UK account.

Which route should you actually use?
- Regular support or rent, or a one-off up to NZ$40,000: a digital provider funded by bank transfer. Wise is cheapest on published pricing; price it against XE on the landed GBP.
- Over about NZ$100,000 with a fixed settlement date: use a Wise quote as your benchmark, then ring OFX and TorFX for a desk price and ask about a forward.
- Pension transfer: a specialist adviser and a New Zealand accountant, not a transfer service.
Businesses paying UK suppliers should start with our Wise Business guide for New Zealand, which covers batch payments and Xero. For every destination, including countries where Wise does not operate, see our guide to the best way to send money overseas from NZ. If your money is going to the continent rather than Britain the IBAN and SEPA rules differ — sending money to Europe from NZ covers those, sending money to the USA from NZ covers ACH versus wire, and sending money to the Philippines from NZ covers InstaPay limits and e-wallet payouts. Our Wise review for New Zealand goes through the account in detail.

Frequently asked questions
What is the cheapest way to send money to the UK from New Zealand?
A digital provider that converts at the mid-market rate and charges a separate stated fee. On published pricing, Wise costs about NZ$4.00–4.18 to send NZ$1,000 to a UK bank account, against roughly NZ$20–35 through a New Zealand bank once the 1.5–3% rate margin is counted. On NZ$20,000 the gap is NZ$250–350. Compare on the GBP that lands.
How long does a transfer from NZ to a UK bank account take?
Usually the same day, often within minutes. Faster Payments settles sterling between UK accounts in seconds, so once your money is converted the final leg is near-instant — Wise reports about 74% of transfers arriving in under 20 seconds. A New Zealand bank sending by SWIFT takes 1–3 working days.
What details do I need to send money to a UK bank account?
The recipient's full name exactly as their bank holds it, their 6-digit sort code and their 8-digit account number. A UK IBAN — 22 characters, starting GB — works instead and holds the same information. You generally do not need a BIC/SWIFT code when a provider pays out on Faster Payments, though your New Zealand bank will ask for one.
Do I need an IBAN to send money to England?
Not usually — sort code and account number are enough for a normal UK bank or building society account. You do need an IBAN for Channel Islands, Isle of Man and Gibraltar accounts. If a recipient gives you only an IBAN that is fine; it is the same details in a different format.
Can I transfer my UK pension to New Zealand?
Sometimes, and it is not a money-transfer job — it moves directly between the two schemes. The receiving scheme must be a QROPS on HMRC's published list. UK transfers count against a £1,073,100 overseas transfer allowance with a 25% charge on the excess, and the transfer is generally taxable here under the foreign superannuation rules, subject to a four-year exemption for new tax residents. From 1 April 2026 a flat 28% Transfer Scheme Withholding Tax option exists. Get advice from a UK-regulated pension transfer specialist first.
Do I pay tax on an inheritance from the UK?
UK inheritance tax is paid by the estate before distribution, not by you, and New Zealand has no inheritance tax, estate duty or gift duty. Cash from a UK legacy is generally not taxable income here. Inheriting assets is different — UK shares or a rental property can bring foreign investment fund or rental-income obligations.
How much money can I send from New Zealand to the UK?
There is no legal limit — New Zealand has no exchange controls and the UK has none on inbound personal transfers. Wise handles up to 20 million GBP per transfer. Expect source-of-funds questions on large sums; New Zealand providers must also file a prescribed transaction report for any international wire of NZ$1,000 or more.
Is receiving British pounds in New Zealand expensive?
It can be. Your bank charges an inbound international payment fee of roughly NZ$10–25 and converts the sterling at its retail rate with a 1.5–3% margin — on £2,000 a month, about NZ$1,100–1,300 a year. Receiving into an account with UK local account details removes most of it.
